The River City Queen

One of the things I love most about Sacramento is being so close to the water. Most of the time I am only able to enjoy our waterways from the shore or along a bike trail. But tonight, that changed! This evening I had the opportunity to enjoy a sunset cruise on the River City Queen for my friend Julie Gallaher’s birthday. Located in Old Sacramento behind the Delta King, the River City Queen is the go-to floating venue if you are looking for an intimate party boat. Since she is always down for adventure I invited my friend Jodie to join me for a first of its kind, happy hour excursion on the river.

After I got off from work I made my way to the Old Sacramento Waterfront. Plenty of parking was available nearby and the ParkMobile app made it easy to pay from my phone as I proceeded to the embarcadero. Upon seeing Jodie, we hugged and I nearly skipped down the ramp with glee. I needed this night.

Our experience was top notch from the beginning as we were greeted with a smiling face and a helping hand to board the boat. Once aboard the top deck we embraced the birthday gal, joined the rest of the party, and then proceeded to make our way downstairs to grab a cocktail. For me, setting the tone for a proper happy hour includes a strong drink and tasty appetizers. The River City Queen met that need! I recommend ordering their margarita and Mai Tai. Glancing to my right, I noticed a scrumptious complimentary fruit & cheese tray and charcuterie board waiting for guests to enjoy. With a big grin on my face, I brought our drinks to my friend who found seating for us outside.

Good news! The bar accepts cash and card.

It was an absolutely gorgeous evening to be on the water. The two-hour cruise first brought us north along the American River. Making our way south down the Sacramento River, we waved to fishermen and other smaller vessels who were also enjoying the current’s gentle sway. There is something special about a sunset, happy hour cruise on the water that is truly unique to Sacramento. To be able to feel a gentle breeze, the warmth of a setting sun and a slow rhythmic movement of the waves isn’t an experience you’ll have while sitting inside a traditional restaurant bar.
